Die psychoanalytische Theorie des Primärprozesses erschienen in Heft 3 / 2010; 64. Jahrgang The psychoanalytic theory of the primary process Freud’s discovery of the primary and secondary process as two functional principles operative in the psychic apparatus is still considered one of the essential cornerstones of psychoanalytic theory. Though in introducing the structural model Freud allotted the primary process to the id, he undertook no modification of the original concept, which was based on economic principles and drive energies. The concept came in for detailed revision and further development in the course of the ongoing progress made by ego psychology and to a lesser extent through Bion’s work on the theory of object relations. Contemporary psychoanalytic theory no longer regards the primary and secondary processes as dichotomous, mutually exclusive events but as a continuum of functional modes present from the beginning of development (Meissner 2005). In addition, new empirical approaches to the investigation of unconscious information processing open up an engagement with other scientific disciplines. They also provide models pertaining to issues connected with the biological and evolutionary significance of primary process-related functions.
